Help for Typhoon Victims

Posted: Updated:

Musicians performed and choirs raised their voices at the cathedral of our lady of the angels, during a benefit concert for the victims of typhoon Haiyan.

"When I was a little kid, I actually studied in Tacloban, so I have memories of Tacloban.  That's why I volunteered myself in this fundraising.  My heart is with the people of Tacloban," said Lem Amit, who organized the concert

The cathedral collected funds that will go directly to the Philippines.

Two weeks after the typhoon hit, the death toll is estimated at more than 5200, tens of thousands are sick or injured and millions are homeless.

"It's just something that nobody expected to be of this magnitude," said Helen De La Vega, the Consul General to the Philippine Consulate in Los Angeles.

That's why the ongoing relief efforts are so desperately needed

So Fed-Ex teamed up with Heart to Heart and Direct Relief – to send a plane full of medical supplies.

"We've got pharmaceuticals and medical supplies that are much in need in the Philippines.

Volunteers are already on the ground," said Parul Bajaj, Spokesperson for Fed-Ex.

Volunteers are already on the ground, and they will help distribute the $10 million worth of supplies.

"They're finding great destruction, people have wounds that they received during the hurricane, that have festered and they're having to clean out the infections.  People are starting to come down with water-borne illnesses…" said Carla Warner, with Heart to Heart International.

Heart to heart says there's still a lot of need in the Philippines – so they're asking for the public's help.  But it's not money they want.  Instead they're asking for doctors and nurses to go to the Philippines with them.
