National Adoption Day

Posted: Updated:

"Come on wave your hands" she called out. Rachel Crow was the darling of National Adoption Day. Crow herself was adopted and is the 2013 national spokesman.

Judge Michael Nash couldn't have been more impressed. He's among the founders of National Adoption Day and called Crow's crowd-pleasing performance "a first." The young singer from X-factor fame gathered the children around her. Kids of all ages came to the make-shift stage. Like Crow, all had been adopted too. This was truly a unique and heartwarming moment. Rachel is now a Nickelodeon star and an extremely lovely young lady.

As we watched families finalize their adoptions it was also a reality check. There is a shortage of foster families in LA County.

National Adoption Day itself was designed to deal with a backlog of court cases back in 1998. In all, there have been over 50,000 adoptions. On this day, attorneys donate their time. While the nation observes the day on Saturday, November 23, LA County holds its day of mass adoptions on the Friday before with 145 children being adopted on that day.  Among them, four siblings from the Wednesday's Child program that airs on Fox 11 News. The Freddie Mac Foundation sponsors Wednesday's Child. The Dave Thomas Foundation is also a sponsor of National Adoption Day which is held in 400 other locations across the nation in all 50 states. At any given time, there are 100,000 children in foster care, 1400 in LA County, waiting for forever families.
