One Of My Professional Idols, Sports Photographer: Peter Read Miller

Posted: Updated:

Several years ago, the General Manager (our big boss) came by my office for a chat. Looking at the collection of photos of my kids all over my wall he said "you know, if the TV  thing doesn't work out, you could be a photographer." I thought it was prudent at that moment not to tell him the truth, I was doing "the TV thing" because my photography career didn't  work out.

My big dream coming out of high school, was to shoot football for NFL properties, or maybe even Sports Illustrated one day. I got as far as shooting Super Bowl 14 (or XIV as Pete Rozelle would insist you call it) for Peterson Publications. I had 6 photos published in their yearly Football Almanac for which I was paid a total of..... 90 bucks. I was just good enough, to starve to death. I got a break in TV news and never looked back. Well almost never.

This morning on Good Day LA, we had on one of my professional idols, Peter Read Miller. Peter has shot 35 Super Bowls, 8 Olympic, and just about every major sporting event on the planet. He has more than 100 Sports Illustrated covers to his credit.  In addition to shooting action, he does a lot of SI's portrait work, so he is as adept at creating a scene, as he is at capturing one unfolding before him. Peter is one of those guys who just sees thing differently than most. Another photographer , including myself,  could stand in the same spot, at the same time, using the same equipment as Peter, and the image he captures will simply be better. Every time.  One of the perks of my job is that from time to time I get to hang out with someone I admire. This morning was one of those times.

Peter was on to talk about his new book, "Peter Read Miller on Sports Photography" which is basically a bible for sports shooters. His website has all the information, and a bunch of his incredible images: www.peterreadmiller.com

Officials say a 16-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane's wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen. "Doesn't even remember the flight," FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night. "It's amazing he survived that."
