Nutritionists: Treat Yourself On Thanksgiving; Don't Deprive

Posted: Updated:

This Thanksgiving, make your turkey and stuffing and eat it too. You actually have the blessing of nutritionists.

Instead of depriving yourself of all the fixings, some health experts are actually recommending to "go easy on yourself" over the holidays.

They aren't saying gorge yourself on dinner and desserts, but you can keep cravings down by eating in moderation.

Their advice is based on numerous studies that found that making a food "forbidden" only makes us want it more.

For example, a 2012 Tel Aviv University experiment found that people who were allowed to eat pastry every morning actually lost more weight over the long term than those who were forbidden from eating it. A University of British Columbia study also showed neuroscientific evidence that forbidding something makes the brain concentrate on it more. Animal studies have also show that mice gorge on sugar if given a little and then deprived for some time.

Are you thinking about skipping breakfast and lunch to eat that big Thanksgiving meal? Well, experts recommend against that too. Also, during the thanksgiving meal, pick your three favorite, high-calorie foods and indulge in those, along with some veggie dishes. Make sure to not continue over-indulging after Thanksgiving, say dieticians.
