Movie Critic Matt Atchity: Holiday Weekend At The Movies

Posted: Updated:

A lot of new releases hitting theaters for the holiday weekend and Matt Atchity says there's something for everyone out there.

First off, Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same without a Disney cartoon and Matt says this one is excellent.

"This is one of the best musicals, one of the best animated films to come out of Disney animation I think in a long time. A lot of the critics really like it...this movie is fantastic and I would really recommend...kids are gonna love it, adults are gonna like it."

The complete opposite of "Frozen" is "Oldboy", Spike Lee's remake of a violent Korean action mystery thriller. Matt says this one is gritty and grim.

"This movie is very violent. If you've seen the original film, you're not gonna be excited about this. If you haven't seen the original go ahead and take the chance, I think you're gonna enjoy it. The critics are split on it. The ones who have seen the original film, kinda coming down saying there isn't really any reason for this movie to exist."

Jason Statham stars in the new flick "Homefront", written by Sylvester Stallone. You'd think this one would be non stop shoot em up...think again.

"I really wanted to like this movie a lot more. The action and tension isn't there...one of the frustrating things is that there's not enough action from Jason Statham. The critics aren't really happy with it."

"Black Nativity" is a family drama with a cast that includes Forest Whitaker, Angelica Bassett, and Jennifer Hudson. It's also a musical, and that's where it lost Matt.

"I found that the music in here takes away from the story a little bit but I like the drama of it...critics are kind of split. Some of them like the music, some of them don't like the music, some of them like the story, some of them don't like the story. I think if you like this cast, you're ultimately going to be satisfied."

Matt also talked up another hit with the critics that's opening in wide release, "Philomena" starring Steve Coogan and Judi Dench.

Matt Atchity is the editor in chief for the pop-culture website "Rotten Tomatoes." He also hosts a new show on Sirius XM called "Rotten Tomatoes Radio."

The weekly one hour call in show airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

‘Rotten Tomatoes TV Zone' is up now on the Rotten Tomatoes website.
