COVINGTON, Ga. -

The Covington Police Department says a fire destroyed the home of one of their officers early Wednesday. No one was hurt, but Officer Chris Smith and his family lost everything they owned. Now, they need your help to get back on their feet.

The department says the family got out, but only with the clothes on their backs.

Officer Smith told Fox 5's George Franco, "At the end of the day, I just thank the good lord that my family is OK and I'm OK.  It's a warm feeling to know that others care."

All day Wednesday, well-wishers dropped off donations at the Covington Police Department including cash and clothing.

Marty Childress who donated some money said, "Maybe it'll make them feel a little better that people in Newton County and Covington do care about them."

Covington police have asked for help from the public as they collect clothes and monetary donations to get them back on their feet.
