Pete the Cat makes leap from folk art to kid books

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Georgia artist James Dean used to think black cats brought bad luck. But he has seen plenty of good fortune 15 years after a trip to the animal shelter ended with him bringing home a pet named Pete.

The cat wandered off after a year, but he's been Dean's muse since 1999. In just a few years, Pete the Cat made a leap from paintings Dean sold at art fairs to starring in a best-selling series of children's books.

"Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses" and "Pete the Cat: The First Thanksgiving" were published last month by HarperCollins. It says Dean's books have sold more than 3.5 million copies since the first volume was published in 2010.

The latest books mark Dean's first collaborations with his wife, Kimberly Dean.
