Phoenix apartment security guard fatally shot

Posted: Updated:

A security guard was shot and killed at a Phoenix apartment complex near 53rd Avenue and Indian School Road overnight, but so far, no arrests have been made.

People who live at the Graybriar apartments in Maryvale are mourning the loss of their beloved security guard, 59-year-old Jeffery Bellemare.  He was on the job, guarding the complex when someone shot him to death and drove off.

"My heart went to my feet when I got the notice.  I said oh my God, I couldn't believe it," said Michael Thompson.

Neighbors at the complex got a notice on their door, telling them the man hired to keep them safe was now the latest murder victim here.

"This to my knowledge will be the third killing in this complex this year," said Thompson.

Bellemare worked for Valley Protective Services and patrolled this complex on a bike for more than a year.

"He was very official about his work and dedicated to making this a safe community and that's how he did things here.  He'd interact with you and say hello, how are you doing," said Thompson.

Neighbors heard at least two shots around 1:30 a.m. Friday.  The security guard was found dead behind one of the complex buildings.

Police say a car drove off after the gunshots.

Neighbors say Bellemare was vigilant, not afraid to approach potential troublemakers.

"If he seen unfamiliar faces, he would go up to you and see what you are doing here and if he knew you, he would say, 'What are you doing out here so late? Shouldn't you be in your house?' and stuff like that," said Idaly Leon.

At this point, investigators don't know who killed the security guard, nor why.

"Why would they do that to a nice, responsible, respectful person knowing that he was doing best for everybody and for that to happen to him is just sad," said Leon.

The suspect vehicle is described as an older model, light colored sedan with a light vinyl top (not a convertible) with damage to the driver's side fender area.

They say there no immediate suspects in the case, which is being investigated as a homicide.

Neighbors tell FOX 10 the victim leaves behind a wife and two children.

Phoenix Police have very little to go on concerning this investigation and they're asking anyone who may have information to please call their Violent Crimes Bureau at (602) 262-6141 or Silent Witness at (480) W-I-T-N-E-SS. As always, any caller may remain anonymous.
