FOLKSTON, Ga. (AP) - The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is offering weekend tours of its new Chesser Island boardwalk in December.

The boardwalk, which stretches ¾ of a mile, just reopened in late November. It had to be rebuilt after being destroyed by the Honey Prairie Fire, a vast wildfire that burned more than 430 square miles of the swamp over the course of nearly a full year from April 2011 until 2012.

Rangers at the refuge will offer one-hour guided walks of the new boardwalk on Saturdays from Dec. 7 through Dec. 21.

Visitors will hear about the plants and animals inhabiting the Okefenokee and their role in the swamp's ecosystem.

The Okefenokee refuge covers roughly 625 square miles straddling the Georgia-Florida state line.
