Shoppers spend Saturday supporting local businesses

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Small business Saturday has come to a close, but many hope this won't be the last day shoppers turn to local businesses.

"It's the one day we say; don't forget your own neighborhood and the hope is that tomorrow you'll remember and the day after you'll remember," Valerie Jarrett said.

Jarrett, White House Senior Advisor and Hyde Park native, came back to her hometown to support her community.

"Small businesses are the economic engine of our country, that's where all the growth in jobs is being created," Jarrett added.

Her first stop was to Bonne Sante Health Foods, where she visited with General Manager, Jorge Perez. "A lot of our staff, we live in the neighborhood so I feel like it drives our local economy. Our little microcosm of sorts and I think we cater to a lot of folks in the community," Perez said.

Small businesses all across the city were drawing in people focused on spending locally. The tough part for many was advertising.

Urban Re-mix in the South Loop does it one way, according to owner Mari Ann Weiss-Cater. "I have over 1800 emails that people have voluntarily given me and so I communicate with them that way," Weiss-Cater said.

‘Succezz' with a ‘z', attracted customers in a different way. Customer Tyler Moore came in to try on new Jordan shoes for Christmas. "I follow them on Instagram and found their negotiating sale today," Moore added.

"We're negotiating prices, it's called the 'price is right' so, you pick up a shoe and we negotiate it with you, go price to price, back and forth," assistant manager, Defron Harris said.

These businesses hope their sales will continue to build a larger customer base for years to come.
