An Arizona State University student who was teaching math at Tempe High School is now facing sexual misconduct charges.
Tempe police say they arrested 26-year-old Joel
Calderon last week after learning about a possible relationship between
him and a female student at Tempe High. Police were initially contacted
by school administrators.
According to authorities, Calderon used social media to get to know the underage girl and that the two had sex multiple times at his home. Sgt. Michael Pooley says Calderon admitted to the inappropriate relationship with the 16-year-old student during an interview.
Court documents say the alleged instances of sexual
contact happened in early November and that Calderon was fired from his
Calderon is facing six counts of sexual conduct with a minor. It's not immediately clear if he has an attorney.
Only one alleged victim has been identified at this time. Pooley says the investigation is ongoing, and there's a possibility of additional charges.
