1 dead in single-engine plane crash in Dawsonville

DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. -

Authorities say one person was killed in a single-engine plane crash in Dawsonville on Monday.
According to Kathleen Bergen of the Federal Aviation Administration, a single-engine Piper Malibu PA-46 aircraft went down near 1549 Auraria Road.

The plane had departed the Morristown, NJ Municipal Airport around 4:30 p.m. and was headed to DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. The pilot sent out a distress call between 7 and 7:30 p.m., according to the FAA.  Not long after that, residents in the area where the plane crashed reported hearing a loud boom.

FOX 5's Chris Shaw reports that the pilot was killed. Authorities initially believed there may have been one other person on board. However, after an extensive search, officials said late Monday they were confident there had been only one person -- the pilot -- on the plane.

Crews recovered the plane's fuselage behind a home. They also recovered the wings of the plane.

Authorities have not released the pilot's name. The aircraft was registered to a Georgia entity, Bergen said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Heidi Moates of the NTSB said that investigators will attempt to determine if weather played a factor in the crash or it due to mechanical or human error.

A preliminary report is expected in about a week. The final report could take up to a year, Moates said.
