PHOENIX -

A man has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of his roommate.

Police say 47-year-old Gary McGill asked the roommate to move out because of issues with the rent.

On Sunday, things got physical and McGill ended up shooting the victim in the groin inside their residence near Sweetwater and 43rd Avenues.

When detectives arrived at the scene, they say the victim had made his way to his truck and they found him slumped over.

Paramedics took the victim to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Court records show McGill told investigators the shooting was done in self defense and that he and his roommate were best friends.

Police say there were no visible injuries on McGill's body.

McGill was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail.
