Prototype device 'cancels' noises coming into your home

Posted: Updated:

It's a familiar problem in the city: noise. But now there is a device in development that can help block out the sound from any room in your home.

The concept was thought up by SONO. It uses a microphone that captures the noise outside and then plays it back out, cancelling any sound before it reaches your window.

Mark Spoonauer from laptopmag.com says it's almost like noise cancelling headphones for your house. The cool thing about the concept is you can fine tune it using a little knob letting in the type of noise you are willing to hear, he says.

"For example if you just wanted to hear the birds you can adjust this thing so that the frequency of sound adjusts and let only what you want through so it could be the chirping of birds where you leave something else out like car alarms," Spoonauer says.

That was something Yew Yorkers we spoke to welcome.

Right now, the device is in the prototype phase now and no price has been set. But when there is one, we'll of course let you and your ears know.

Many new Ford and GM cars have built-in technology that allows you to monitor speed, signaling, and navigation when your child is driving. But when it comes to this type of digital snooping, teens and their parents often have differing opinions. Kids may call it an invasion of privacy. Most parents, of course, will likely feel otherwise.
