Clean up after fire guts Buckhead bike shop

Posted: Updated:

Workers spent Thursday morning boarding up the remains of a Buckhead business that caught fire late Wednesday night.

According to officials, the fire broke out at Peachtree Bikes on Peachtree Street around 8 p.m. Firefighters said the business was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Crews managed to put the fire out by 10 p.m., but it appeared that the business was mostly destroyed.

"It is sad because it's a landmark here, And everyone who shops here and rides for these guys are just a real close family," said patron Shannon Greenhill.

Witnesses said the sound of bike tires popping in the fire sounded like gunshots.

Officials closed that section of Peachtree Street as they investigated the cause of the fire.

Fire officials said the building had fire walls which helped stop the flames from spreading to nearby businesses.

"I'm just glad no one was in there when it happened," said Greenhill.

Several businesses around the bike shop suffered smoke and water damage. They are trying to determine if they will be able to open before the weekends. They say they are concerned about being closed during the busy holiday shopping season.
