Their voices are still developing, but they are strong. The children's choir of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, in Tujunga, practices three times a week. They have a lot to prepare for, twenty five of the young kids have been invited to sing at Carnegie Hall next summer. Yes, the one in New York!
"I still can't believe it," says choir master Ania Balon. When the choir sang last April, at the Choirs of America Festival in Anaheim, the conductors liked them so much, they passed on the information to the 2014 Choirs of American nationals committee.
"It's a dream come true," adds Balon. Although this dream comes with a price. The choir has to finance its way to the East Coast. "This is not a rich community, some of the parents were afraid to have the children join the choir because they couldn't afford it, or they needed the kids to help out with siblings at at home, since both parents work - sometimes two jobs each!"
For the children, who are 12-years-old and younger, it seems like an impossible dream., Yet, those strong voices come from some pretty strong kids. They may not be rich in money, but they are rich in spirit. They are already planning a choir concert this Sunday, December 8th, at 5:00 pm. The adult choir will be singing as well. After all, they also want to help raise funds for the trip.
There are plane tickets to purchase, rooms (at a reasonable price in New York?!) and meals. The visit is scheduled for June, so they have some time to put together the money. "Perhaps there is an angel out there" says an eleven year old... Perhaps.
