Athens animal shelter closing, seeks homes for pets

Posted: Updated:
ATHENS, Ga. -

An animal shelter in Athens facing closure is searching for homes for its pets.

Petzone, a no-kill animal shelter, is in dire financial straits. After three years, the property where the shelter is located is being sold and owner Kate Carpenter said they don't have money to move.

The shelter is now looking for homes for its 18 dogs and three cats.

"Rescue is an expensive business and without good people that give us financial support, places like Petzone, no-kill shelters, cannot really survive without support from the people," Carpenter said.

Carpenter founded PetZone five years ago. Board member Wesley Leach said that the land sold is the last straw. He said they have been operating on a shoestring budget over the last year. Things have been so bad that they can't pay basic utilities, Leach said. The shelter doesn't even have a phone line.

"We need rescue. It's what we do is rescue dogs, but right now we need rescue so we can continue to rescue these dogs and that is what we want. We just want to keep saving lives," Leach said.

Carpenter said that she estimates the shelter has saved about 2,500 dogs and cats over the last five years.
