NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - A new school slated to open in September 2014 will be named the Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice, said city officials on Friday.

Mandela died a day earlier at his home in South Africa at the age of 95.

Mandela visited New York City in 1990 and just months after he was released from serving 27 years in prison for political offenses during the Apartheid era.

Among his stops, was the Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn.   The new school will be located on the same campus.

"Nelson Mandela visited this building not long after he was released from prison, and we want to ensure that the special bond between the students and this legendary figure will live forever," said Schools Chancellor Walcott.

"Every time they enter and exit its doors, our students at this new school will be reminded of the values he personified. A school that bears his name will encourage our students to demonstrate courage, overcome obstacles, and embrace community. His legacy will forever live on in New York City schools, and I hope our students will reflect on, grow from, and emulate this extraordinary man."

The former president of South Africa and Nobel Peace Prize winner is survived by his third wife, Graca Machel, three daughters (three other children died) and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.
