High school teams square off at Meadowlands

Posted: Updated:

The sectional titles, a shot at the state championship, are an annual rite of passage at the Meadowlands. But this year, for these teams the games mean a little something extra because in just a few months the biggest game in the world will be played on the same field.

The Hasbrouck Heights Aviators and Pompton Lakes Cardinals squared off first at MetLife on Friday night under the lights.

These are the biggest games of the year because state titles are on the line.

Cardinals coach Scott Mahoney knows playing on the big stage, where the spotlight of the world will be this February means a lot for these student athletes.

A weekend of high school games at MetLife are also highlighted by the PC Richard Huddle Shuttle tour, the rolling football experience traveling to locations in New York and New Jersey leading up to February's game.

Players lined up in the elements, with rain falling and temps dropping, to get a little taste of what the first cold weather outdoor Super Bowl may bring.
