Call for safety review at Queensboro Bridge

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The exit to the Queensboro Bridge in Long Island City is "a death trap," says NYC Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer who is pushing for a safety review of the ramp.

On Tuesday, a third person died while exiting the curved road. Off-duty NYPD Officer Elisa Toro, 36, was a mother of two and worked out of the 17th precinct on the East Side. She was killed when her Ford Focus hit a guard rail and then a concrete barrier and the car flipped. The crash happened at about 1:50 a.m. as she came off the notorious bridge..

"It’s incredibly dangerous. Cars exiting the Queensboro Bridge, some may be going too fast, but because of the nature of the turn and the turn directs them into the sidewalk, we’ve had several cars jump the curb, jump the jersey barrier and fly into the very same store front multiple times," said Bramer.

In the past two years there have been four accidents and three fatalities at the curve from the outside lane of the bridge, including May 2011, March and April of 2013 and Tuesday.

The Department of Transportation didn’t intend to make this road dangerous but it is dangerous,” said Bramer.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly says the cement barriers were put up because there had been previous accidents where cars had going up onto the sidewalk.

Bream suggests the DOT straighten out the exit from the bridge.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
