Stepdaughter donating kidney to ailing parent

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A man desperate for a kidney found a donor close to home: his own stepdaughter.

Bruce Newbold worked in the Emory Transplant Center. He was a phlebotomist, drawing blood from people undergoing transplant procedures.

"Every time I called a patient back and drew their blood, I would always say, ‘They go out by the grace of God,'" said Newbold.

Newbold is now at the transplant center as a patient.  He had cancer and the radiation damaged his kidneys.

"It zapped my kidneys, it got them down to where they wouldn't work," Newbold said.

Bruce takes 52 pills a day and is on dialysis. His life is about to get much easier thanks to his 28-year-old stepdaughter, Catherine Douglas. She's giving him one of her kidneys. Douglas was a perfect match despite the fact that she has no blood relation to Bruce.

Both are going through final exams before the transplant operation. Bruce admits he's scared, but not for himself.

"I just want to make sure she's all right," said Newbold.

The transplant is scheduled for Friday morning. Both are looking forward to Bruce's life getting back to normal. For updates on the surgery, visit Denise Dillon's Facebook page.
