Sarah Atwell: The Girl With Half A Face

Posted: Updated:

In case I don't say it enough, let me say it again: I really love my job.  Over the years it's allowed me to experience, witness and meet so many different people from different walks of life.

On any given day here at the studio we get the chance to met and talk with celebrities.  On the red carpet or at press junkets I've been able to interview people I grew up watching, it's all pretty fascinating. But honestly over the years many of these interviews all start to blur together.

But today I got to interview a young lady and her story will stay with me for quite some time.
Last night I sat down with my kids to watch a documentary that wasn't easy to watch, but such an important one for kids and teens to watch, for that matter even adults.

It's called "The Girl With Half a Face" it airs December 18th on Discovery Fit & Health. It's about 18-year-old Sarah Atwell, who suffers from a rare disease called Neurofibromatosis.

To say she doesn't look like the typical teen is an understatement. She had a massive tumor that continued to grow on the right side of her face. After years of brutal bullying Sarah went through a really risky operation to remove part of the tumor.

The special follows Sarah in the days and weeks leading up to the surgery.

Talking with Sarah you'll see she doesn't seem bitter, and has forgiveness in her heart. She hopes to go to prom and some day work with little kids. I hope you enjoy meeting her as much as I did.

Discovery Fit & Health is partnering with DoSomething.org for the special on an anti-bullying campaign. "The Girl With Half a Face" premieres Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 10 p.m.

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
