Study: Most elderly woman spend majority of their time sitting

First Lady Michelle Obama has her 'Lets' Move' campaign to get kids active, but new research is showing kids aren't the only ones who need a jumpstart.

How much time during the day do you spend sitting? When life slows down so does your body, apparently.

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health looked at seven thousand women with an average age of 71. The new study finds the elderly women spend about two thirds of their waking hours sedentary, or in a sitting position.

"They found these women were awake for, on average, 14.8 hours but 65 percent of the time they spent sedentary," says Dr. Ronan Factora from the Cleveland Clinic.

The ladies each wore an accelerometer to measure their movement for a week. Results show that after seven days women spent 10 of their 15 awake hours sitting. There were brief bursts of activity but those moments were surrounded by sedentary behavior.

The goal now needs to be to educate all age groups about the importance of moving.

"Clearly the benefits for all major diseases: High blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, they can be impacted by being physically active and exercising," says Dr. Factora.

Being physically active doesn't mean you have to do an intense workout at the gym. Dr. Factora says as little as 15 - 30 minutes a day spent walking can provide some health benefits.

Complete findings for this study are in the "Journal of the American Medical Association."
