Everyone wants tech gifts for the holidays

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

We may forever remember 2013 as the year that tech got greedy and the machines won.

"What we're seeing is: Everyone wants a technology-related gift these days as opposed to just one or two gifts on the list," says Jazmin Hupp, marketing director at Tekserve in Manhattan.

Browsing the 5,000 items Tekserve keeps in stock, we find that nerds now stick wires into everything. Pink plastic still-sow-shaped piggy banks report your savings to your smartphone.

"You can set it up to notify you if someone picks up your PorkFolio," Hupp says.

Playing ball with a pet or the neighborhood kids requires a tablet.

"He's waterproof, he's dog-proof, he's kid-proof," Hupp says of a remote-controlled ball.

And if you want to make your loved ones look like crazy people this holiday season, for $60 you can link their cell phone to a pair of gloves."

"I have a speaker and a microphone embedded in the tips and I can literally talk to the hand," Hupp says.

In this Wi-Fi-compatible new world phones also drive Ferraris. Actually phones rule everything around me and you -- and apparently our holiday shopping.

Shining new tricks like this one can't guarantee to make you the light of your party.

Owning a pork-folio won't necessarily make you punny or frugal. But if you need a gift in the $50 to $200 range for someone who is ok with handing the machines their final victory, now you know what's new, what's popular, and what's not always going to help you look sane this holiday season.

Everyone hates long lines at security checkpoints and the TSA knows it. Now the TSA is sponsoring a contest to encourage anyone with new ideas about how to make the airport security lines go faster. Often for air travelers, the security checkpoint experience is the worst part of their trip. That's why the TSA turned to the crowdsourcing site Innocentive asking for ideas pledging a total of $15,000 in prize money, with at least one $5,000 award.

Deep beneath the hustle and bustle of Tribeca lies a modern-day oasis brimming with old world charm: Aire Ancient Baths, my new favorite city escape. The breathtaking spa is illuminated by hundreds of candles and smells of invigorating eucalyptus. For around $80 you can bathe in the tranquil blue pools for 90 minutes and find the temperature that's right for you.
