Secret Santa Mail For Less Fortunate Could Be Scam

Southwest Philadelphia -

It's a warning for those wanting to do some good this holiday season! There's an offer to help those less fortunate, but it's not what it appears to be. A local woman says she was reeled in, but didn't take the bait.

She spoke to FOX 29's Thalia Perez.

It's the time of year when many get into the giving spirit, but when Gloria Robinson responded to an on-line ad to become a Secret Santa for those less fortunate, she says this check came in the mail along with a letter and it just didn't add up

"That kind of threw a flag up. A check for $2210.00 should completely go to who you want me to send it to," Robinson said.

The letter instructs Robinson to donate $250 to charity, take $250 for herself and then split up the rest to buy two gift cards to be mailed to addresses in Chicago and Los Angeles.

Lance Haver is the director of consumer affairs for the City of Philadelphia.

"This is the worst example of some thieves who send you a fake check in the mail telling you to put it in your bank," Haver said. "It will look like a check, but when your bank tries to collect on that check it will bounce and the money you have spent will be lost."

To the naked eye it looks like an ordinary check but when our camera lens gets closer. Look at the watermark that appears. It reads void. Gloria Robinson says grateful she didn't deposit this check.

This time of year. There's a lot of good people out here, but there's also a lot of bad people out here doing the wrong thing" Gloria said.

If you receive anything in the mail that does not appear to be report it immediately to the U.S. Postal Service.
