Griffin man rings Salvation Army bell for two decades

GRIFFIN, Ga. -

An 85-year-old man has been ringing bells for the Salvation Army in the same spot in Griffin for 20 years.

Glenn Martin has been spreading Christmas cheer for two decades outside the Griffin Sock Shoppe.

"It's not a job, it's a pleasure, because most people like their jobs anyways," said Martin.

Bud Turner, the Griffin Sock Shoppe owner, credits martin for thousands of dollars for the Salvation Army.

"He's one of the fixtures and he's the reason we've taken, in the last 20 years, this kettle drive in Griffin from an annual budget of $30,000, to last year's $175,000," Turner said.

In a season built on traditions, Glenn hopes ringing this bell is one that comes around again.

"I hope I'm physically able to do it for a long time, I don't think about throwing in the towel and if God lets me, I'll stand out here and do it some more," Martin said.

Martin said he's rings his bell a couple of times a week. He said when it gets really cold, he just moves the kettle inside and keeps on ringing.
