Brian Banks & Reggie Cole: California Innocence Project

Posted: Updated:

Imagine...you're wrongly accused of a capital crime and imprisoned. There are flaws in any system and that includes the U.S Justice system. And attorneys for the California Innocence Project estimate as many as 10 percent of California's prison population has been wrongly accused.

On Friday December 20th, representatives from the Innocence Project will hold a Noon march and rally outside the state capitol in Sacramento. They want California Governor Jerry Brown to consider clemency for the "California Twelve." These are 12 men and women the CIP says are not guilty of the crimes which put them behind bars.

Before driving to Sacramento, three key players in the California Innocence Project stopped by Good Day LA and spoke to Steve Edwards. Innocence Project Attorney Michael Semanchic accompanied two former prisoners... both men proven to be wrongly accused. Former High School Football star and NFL player Brian Banks spent more than five years in prison after begin falsely accused of rape by a classmate. And Reggie Cole, who was serving life in prison for a murder he didn't commit until he actually killed a man while in prison... and the reality of his past began to surface.

The amazing work of the California Innocence Project is highlighted in this Steve Edwards interview segment from Thursday's Good Day LA.

Founded in 1999 at California Western School of Law, the California Innocence Project (CIP) reviews more than 2,000 claims of innocence from California inmates each year.

The California Innocence Project is a law school clinical program dedicated to releasing wrongfully convicted inmates and providing an outstanding educational experience to the students enrolled in the clinic. Students work alongside CIP staff attorneys on cases where there is strong evidence of factual innocence. Our work protects the integrity of the justice system and seeks to provide justice for all.
