Subway donates more than 1,000 sandwiches to Detroit agencies giving back to the community

In efforts to say "thanks" for all the hard work, Subway donated more than one thousand sandwiches to Detroit agencies that are known for giving back to the community. Subway donated the sandwiches this week over a three-day period and, in all, handed out 1,200 sandwiches.

"Each day we're donating sandwiches to multiple organizations throughout Detroit that are giving back to their community, and we would like to thank them for their hard work that often goes thankless," says Asi Vozis, a Subway spokesperson.

Nine local service organizations benefited from this sub sandwich blitz, from Gleaners to Detroit Police and Fire departments to Young Detroit Builders, a small agency with a big mission.

Executive Director Angela Wilson describes the mission: "To reconnect these young people to their communities and have them be positive, contributing citizens here in Detroit. That's the bottom line of what we do here."

Young Detroit Builders helps unemployed young adults rebuild their communities and their own lives.  Their programs help disadvantaged youth continue their education and learn job and life skills through community service. It's a mission with a lot of heart - and you know how the saying goes: "The way to a person's heart is through their stomach," says a smiling Vozis.

So, it's a well-deserved lunch break for the crews and, although a single sandwich may not seem like much, it's what it represents that makes all the difference.

"They were excited that Subway would think to give them lunch. It doesn't seem like a big deal, probably to Subway it's not a big deal, but for them it's like, 'Wow. Somebody else noticed,'" Wilson says. "It's a statement that says 'You're important.'"
