Bloomberg shows off No. 7 train extension

Posted: Updated:

Outgoing Mayor Michael Bloomberg was inbound to the new No. 7 subway stop. As usual the mayor swiped-in like the rest of us.

When construction is completed in the fall, the No. 7 will stretch from Times Square where it ends now all the way to 34th Street and 11th Avenue. It's part of Bloomberg's plan to revitalize the West Side's Warehouse District.

The mayor had hoped a stadium would rise over Hudson Yards, but that failed along with the city's 2012 Olympic bid.

"We didn't get the stadium and I always thought it was a good idea I still do," Bloomberg said. "But if you look at this neighborhood, in some senses, this neighborhood has been redone. And many of the things we wanted to do for the Olympics… they got done."

Construction cranes surround what will be a planned residential and commercial hub, dubbed Hudson Yards. The No. 7 train will stop at the heart of it -- right near the Javits Center.

"It will make it easier for those who want to come here and as the area develops there will be a whole new series of offerings, the retail development at Hudson Yards and hotels, it will make the whole building more appealing to the community," said Alan Steel, the CEO of the Javits Center.

The city paid the $2.4 billion tab. The mayor says he would like his legacy to be projects like the 7 train extension. Construction that he says can transform neighborhoods down the line.

Burger chain Five Guys is testing the adage that everything tastes better with bacon. It is rolling out a customizable milkshake program and along with bananas, peanut butter, Oreo cookies, salted caramel, you can chose bacon.  Yes that's right: a bacon milkshake.
