Young Father Killed in Duarte

Posted: Updated:

A 4-week-old baby boy is now fatherless because his dad, 18-year-old Malcolm Mency, was shot and killed.

Mency supposed to go on paternity leave last week, but was asked to work a few more days.  His shift was supposed to end at 2 a.m. But got sent home early, he was supposed to get picked up from work, but decided to walk home.  Because that chain of events, Mency was shot and killed, less than a block away from home.

"It's hard because, every time I look at him I see his dad," said Labreonne Moore.  She's Mency's girlfriend and the mother of his son.

"He got shot on his way home from work, five times, right after we got off the phone," said Moore.

The LA County Sheriff's Department says the shooting happened at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, at the intersection of Brodereck and Felberg Avenues near Duarte, but they have no leads on a suspect.

Mency's mother, Alberta Lockhart, doesn't understand how or why her son was killed.  "Malcolm was a kind person if you needed something he would give it to you. If he could help you he would help you," said Lockhart.

And he was about to become a licensed vocational nurse.  "He was doing his intern and the place he was doing his intern at they were going to hire him," said Lockhart.

Instead Mency's life was cut short.

"All he did was go to school and go to work and come here to see his son that's all he did every single day. Work school and son that's it," said Moore.

"If you saw what happened, please come forward.  Please tell, because the person who did this to me is a coward.  How can you even sleep at night?" said Lockhart.

The LA County Sheriff's station says there was another shooting Sunday afternoon; a young man was shot in the back and is in the hospital.  Investigators are trying to figure out if the two shootings are connected.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Department.
