Gina's People: Chess And Change

Posted: Updated:

Could a board game have the power to change the lives of inner city kids? One Compton man seems to think so. He's the focus of "Gina's People" this week.

Damen Fletcher is a chess master. He's been playing since he was a kid. He believes chess teaches kids all about real life issues. He says, "You can see the change in focus and the kids are able to study at a high degree." In 2006, Fletcher started "Train Of Thought", an enrichment program that brings chess to kids who wouldn't normally be exposed to this game.  When kids play chess on a regular basis, Fletcher says kids get better at critical thinking.  The kids we spoke with agree.  Student Madison Tyler says, "The most important thing I learned is to think before I make a move or decision. For example, on the chess board I think before I make my move and in life, I have a choice to watch TV or study. I think about it first and then make my decision."

Fletcher is hoping to bring chess to children at all schools in Southern California. He says, "In my heart, I really want every student to have access to this game."

If you know someone who is making a difference in the community, let us know. Every Monday morning we recognize our special FOX 11 viewers.
