NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Newark cops are investigating an apparent violent carjacking attempt that happened Monday morning.

Police responded to North 5th Street just after 11:15 a.m. where they found a motorist who said a group or armed men tried to steal his Mercedes-Benz, authorities said. The motorist tried to drive away from the gunmen, who opened fire, striking the car once, police said.

The gunmen then drove off in a getaway car, which they ditched at Bloomfield Avenue and Third Street, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information about this crime to call at 877- NWK-TIPS.

Back on December 15, a husband and wife were carjacked after shopping at The Mall at Short Hills. The husband was shot and killed. Authorities have four suspects in custody.
