Local Democratic leaders critical of Obama judicial appointments

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Some of the biggest Democratic figures in Georgia are opposing the judges selected by President Barack Obama to fill court seats metro Atlanta.

Congressman John Lewis, the Rev. Joseph Lowery and more than two-dozen other political and community leaders have lined up to oppose the slate of federal judges appointed by the White House. They said that the President accepted the list of nominees from Republican senators without any input from them.

Among the appointments drawing fire are Mike Boggs and attorney Mark Cohen.

Boggs was in the middle of the Confederate flag controversy while he was a state legislator.

The coalition is also critical of Cohen for his work on the voter ID law, which black leaders say is designed to suppress minority votes.

Lewis said if the White House does not alter the judicial appointments, he is prepared to testify against those two when they go before the Senate for approval.
