Wayne Co.'s Internet crime unit shutting down

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

The Wayne County Internet Crime Unit has been disbanded and will cease to exist come the beginning of 2014. Why? It's not required by the Wayne County Charter.

"However, when that charter was drawn up nobody had heard of the Internet. So, no one has gone back and revised that charter," says Corporal Erin Diamond of the Wayne County Sheriff's Dept. The unit investigates more than Internet crimes against children, too. They investigate computer-device crime.

"Any type of crime that touches digital evidence we handle. From homicides, to missing kids, to human exploitation, under aged prostitution, to deed fraud - a big problem in Wayne County, stealing people's houses - we take care of all that. We also provide services to the Michigan Department of Corrections, handling all of their sex offenders who have digital devices. If a judge says 'Hey, you can have a home computer but it's got to be checked' - we check it," he explains.

Wayne County Charter. Wayne Co. Judge Timothy Kenny denied Sheriff Benny Napoleon's request for more money to operate . The judge ruled that anyone working for the Sheriff should be funded and staffed with the jail budget.

"In this day and age it's unthinkable. I mean, every case that you see on the news they got a cell phone involved, there's a computer, surveillance cameras. We're trained in all that," says Diamond.

The unit is hoping it can get with commissioners in Wayne County, the Sheriff and the judge to see if something can be worked out.
