Unemployment up in 11 Illinois metro areas

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) -- The state Department of Employment Security said local unemployment rose in nearly all of the state's metro areas during November.

The department said Friday that rates increased in eleven metro areas, falling in only the Chicago-Joliet-Naperville metro to 8.1 percent. State officials said temporary layoffs pushed rates higher.

Danville's metro area was particularly hard-hit with unemployment rising to 11.7 percent this November compared with 9.4 percent last November. Decatur saw unemployment rise from 10.1 percent last November to 12.2 percent this year.

The department says Illinois businesses did add 60,000 jobs in seven metro areas, most in the Chicago-Joliet-Naperville area. The Peoria area lost about 3,100 jobs.
