6 Hurt Including Kids, After Being Thrown From Horses

Posted: Updated:

A freak accident just before noon on Saturday at the Los Angeles Equestrian center in Burbank sent 6 people to the hospital, including kids.

"This horse came up at break neck speed, with its ears back, and you know that's a sign of fright to me," said Grady Nalley, who was at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center.

The Burbank fire department says a horse got loose from a stable– and spooked other horses.

"And the horses when they saw it they just stopped, started throwing the riders off," said Nalley.

Mary Ann Hermasen was on the trail and saw what she describes as a stampede heading her way.  "We were going this way, and coming toward us were about 15 to 20 horses that were running at full gallop," said Hermasen.

"The next thing I saw was a crowd of people chasing on foot and I thought something's wrong and I stood up and right behind them was a group of horses," said Nalley.

According to witnesses many of the riders were inexperienced or taking lessons, others were children who were unable to control or stop their horses.

The Burbank fire department says there was a range of injuries – some patients were put on back boards as a precaution.  None of the injuries appear to be life threatening.

"A couple that were thrown off the horse and hit in the face type deals. A possible couple fractures and I think somebody had maybe a broken nose and bleeding," said Battalion Chief Kenneth Robertson, with the Burbank Fire Department.

"It was awful. You know we love riding our horses but they are animals and they weren't experienced riders," said Hermasen.

The fire department says the horse that escaped didn't belong to the equestrian center.  There are many stables and horse properties in the area, it's still unclear who the horse belongs to.
