New Survey Sheds Light On Real Impact Of Divorce

Posted: Updated:

A new survey finds that parents are often in denial about how bad a divorce affects their children.

The survey by parenting website Netmums found that less than one percent of parents are aware if their children turn to alcohol or drugs to deal with divorce.

In addition, only one in every 10 parent said they thought their child was hiding their true feelings. In fact, 39 percent of the children polled said that they were hiding their true feelings.

Furthermore, one in 20 children of divorced parents said they turned to drugs in alcohol to cope. One in five children polled said that they felt no point in confiding in either parent because they thought their parents were too wrapped up in themselves

Here are some other findings from the poll:

  • One in 12 children felt forced to look after the parent as the relationship broke down.
  • 35% of children claimed one of their warring parents tried to turn them against the other.
  • 13% blamed themselves for the split.
  • One in nine children admitted to engaging in self-harm during the relationship breakdown.
  • Six percent considered suicide
  • 10 percent of parents realized that their child had seen them fighting. 31% of children actually saw their parents fighting.
  • 53% of moms and dads were worried that their families would be judged. Only 27% of kids agreed.
  • 18% of parents thought that divorce meant that they had failed. Nine percent of children felt the same about their parents.

"To flourish, children need security and while we will never see a society free from break ups, we should be investing more time, more care and more money into making sure our youngsters have all the support they need to get through this difficult time," Siobhan Freegrad, the founder of Netmums wrote.

1000 parents were surveyed in this study. In addition, 100 children were surveyed separately.
