COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

Two people are dead after speeding away from an early morning traffic stop in Cobb County on New Year's Day.

A spokesperson for the Cobb County Police Department tells FOX 5 News that a Marietta Police officer pulled over a black Camaro in the 700 block of Sandtown Road just after 5 a.m. The officer had just got out of the vehicle when the Camaro took off.

The fleeing driver ended up crashing down a 100-foot ravine in the 900 block of S. Cobb Drive near Carruth Drive. Both the driver and a passenger were ejected from the vehicle. Police say neither person survived. The names of the individuals were not yet released.

Investigators are trying to determine why the pair fled the scene of the traffic stop.
