(FOX 11 / CNS) Grand Park reached capacity for the city's first organized New Year's Eve party and was closed to additional revelers, authorities said today.
A Los Angeles Fire Department fire marshal announced at 11 p.m. Tuesday that no one else should be admitted to the three-block Grand Park adjacent to City Hall, Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Kristin Hagerty said. It was estimated the park could hold 5,000 people, but authorities later allowed more than that into the park, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Parks Bureau Sgt. L. Barron said.
Several thousand additional revelers were in the area surrounding the park, authorities said.
The sheriff's department had about 40 deputies on scene, Barron said. Hagerty said there were about 20 LAPD officers patrolling the perimeter of the park.
The 12-acre park, opened in July 2012, is administered by Los Angeles County.
