Walmart employees in Acworth accused of stealing from store

Posted: Updated:
ACWORTH, Ga. -

Six Walmart employees in Acworth, Ga. are accused of running an internal theft ring out of the store. Authorities said they managed to steal about $6,000 in merchandise before being stopped.

Investigators say the employees would ring each other up at the register, but before the transaction was complete, they would void most of the items, allowing their coworkers to walk out of the store with merchandise they hadn't paid for.

"Either a credit card or cash was handed over to make it appear that all the items were paid for, when in fact only a bare minimum were," said Acworth Police Captain Mark Cheatham.

Walmart Loss Prevention tipped off police after they started noticing that certain employees had voided more transactions than normal.

"The police department would be unaware of this had it not been for loss prevention bringing to our attention and thankfully they know the system, internally speaking, so it made the investigation somewhat easy," Cheatham said.

Police say the gang was stealing electronics, clothing and even food. There is no word yet on whether they were keeping the goods for themselves or re-selling it on the street. So far, none of the stolen merchandise has been found.

"Not only are loss prevention looking specifically for shoplifters, but they have to also monitor their own employees, which is unfortunate, but it's a reality," said Cheatham.

Police arrested:  21-year-old Beauford J. Goodrum, of Kennesaw; 19-year-old Lamaris Denise Fields, of Acworth; 22-year-old Shawn Allen Harris, of Dallas; 19-year-old Jamecah Ania Ray, of Acworth; 56-year-old Barbara Weston, of Decatur; and 43-year-old Yashica Rene Campbell, of Kennesaw.

They are charged with theft by deception. All of those arrested have posted bail.
