Slippery Weather Makes It Tough For Drivers & Walkers

Posted: Updated:

The melting snow mixed with freezing rain and created an even bigger problem for drivers and walkers Sunday.

"The roads were like a skating rink. I mean a couple guys could play ice hockey out here," said driver James Loftus.

Spin outs and slide offs could be found all over area roads in the morning.

This car's front end got smashed near Bustletown and Byberry.

"We saw at least 30 cars off the road and smacked up," said driver Matthew Ekey."It was like a straight sheet of ice, the whole way it was a sheet of ice. You couldn't go over three or four miles per hour. If you did you'd end up sliding into another car."

The icy weather also shut down State Road 1 in Delaware for about an hour around 8am.

The Philadelphia Zoo never opened and several regional rails had delays thanks to old man winter.

The Street Department tweeted they've used more salt on this storm than they did fighting the 28 inch blizzard in 2010.

Then there were the sidewalks.

FOX 29 cameras caught several people slipping on their stroll through old city.

Runners found better footing on the streets.

Bart the Pomeranian and his owner Kelly Catania learned the winter weather was no walk in the park.

"It's slipping and sliding and he turns and I'm going to slip," said Catania.

The advice for handling the conditions is the same, no matter what language you speak.

"Guida con cautela," Mimmo Cefariello said in Italian. That means "go very, very slow and watch out."
