UPPER DARBY, Pa -

A man out looking for his lost dog was struck and killed while walking along Providence Road in Upper Darby, Pa.

The person driving left 69-year-old Richard Patterson and his dog for dead. Now Upper Darby police are looking for that driver.

FOX 29 was there moments after the Patterson's son found out his father was a dead victim in a hit-and-run accident.

Upper Darby Police say Patterson lives on Carriage Avenue in Upper Darby and was out looking for his lost poodle. Just after finding the dog, he and the dog were struck and knocked nearly 100 feet as other drivers passed. Both the man and his dog died on the scene.

"One witness unfortunately people were driving around the male while he was either dead or lying in the highway," Upper Darby Police Chief Michael Chitwood said.

Family members rushed to the scene as accident investigators search for clues. Nearby residents say drivers go too fast on this stretch of road.

"This is a child filled neighborhood you have a lot of young kids. Young students It's really dangerous," Uri Johnson said.

Police say the driver had to have been going at least 60 miles an hour and had to know they hit something.

"We see these too often these tragic events where somebody is walking the streets and these bums kill them and take off," Chitwood said.

Police only have a description of a light colored car with new front end damage. If you have any information, call Upper Darby Police.
