Police Release Video Of Car In Delco Hit And Run Death

Posted: Updated:
UPPER DARBY, Pa. -

Upper Darby Police released surveillance video of the white vehicle detectives now believe plowed into 69 year-old Richard Patterson and his dog Sunday afternoon after he retrieved his runaway poodle "Baby" a block from his Carriage Lane home.

"These bums get behind the wheel of a car, which I consider a weapon when they kill or serious injure somebody, and flee the scene," Police Supt. Michael Chitwood told reporters.

Investigators say the driver of the mid-size four door vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when he or she struck and killed the retired carpenter and his 5 year-old dog, then drove away.

"Mr. Patterson was either dragged or thrown another 50 to 60 feet," Chitwood explained.

Chitwood says Patterson and the dog died at the scene. What makes matters worse he says, witnesses told investigators several people drove around the victim and his dog as he layed dying in the street.

"It's sad. It's a sad commentary," Chitwood added. "Here's a guy, who's either dying or dead on the street, and nobody stops. They drive around him."

"Very friendly, he would be out every day walking the dog," Patterson's neighbor Janet Gosell told FOX 29.

No one at the Patterson home wanted to speak with reporters Monday, but neighbors say Patterson walked his dog three or four times a day, stopping to chat with friends on his cul de sac. He is also survived by his wife Barbara and his three children.

"I just couldn't believe it. Still overwhelmed," Gosell said. I would see him walking down the street with the little dog."

Chitwood says police recovered several parts from the striking vehicle, which he says drove off with its bumper hanging off. He believes serious charges should be filed when the driver is arrested.

"They should be treated like a first degree or third degree murderer. Period," he said.

Police are reviewing more surveillance video from the area and checking the car parts left behind at the scene to determine the make and model of the car that struck Patterson.

They are also checking local body shops to see if anyone came in with a white car with lots of front end damage. The car may be missing a front headlight.

Chitwood believes the driver was doing 50 to 60 miles per hour in a 35 mph speed zone.

Police have received over 60 tips about the crash via telephone or social media. And early Wednesday morning, there are reports that the suspect has surrendered to his lawyer. A lot more on this story as the day goes on.
