Neighbors in Lyon Twp. worry about $500 late-shoveling fine

(WJBK) -

A woman who has lived in her house for 20 years says she received a letter prompting the shoveling of her sidewalk. The letter says if she does not shovel she will face a fine.

Kathleen Quillen of New Hudson usually depended on her husband to take care of their driveway. "The last time he cleared it was February the 27th. It was heavy and wet. But then he passed away March the 22nd," she says. Not only that, after 63-year-old Quillen suffered a heart attack and survived cancer, doctors tell her not to go out and shovel - especially in the subzero temperatures.

"This weather that we've had right now is extreme. I mean, for me to have to go out there every two or three hours to try and do my driveway? That's a lot," she says.

She, along with several other neighbors, received a letter from Lyon Township last January clearly stating if the sidewalk adjacent to their property is not shoveled within 24 hours a five hundred dollar fine will be imposed.

"Nobody else on this block got a notice, only the people that live adjacent to this sidewalk," Quillen says. Neighbors say this sidewalk has not been shoveled in 20 years.

Speaking with the township's zoning administration they tell Fox 2 the ordinance has been in effect for years, they just haven't had the resources to enforce it until now. The area in question, they say, is property of the county - not Quillen - but that it is a public right of way and is to be maintained by the subdivision. They also say the situation has been on to the township supervisor.
