West Mount Airy -

On the worst kind of morning to stand outside some local kids were left without rides to school.

Police say someone has been stealing school bus batteries.

FOX 29's Thalia Perez went to Philadelphia Police Headquarters for more information on this story.

Durham Bus Company says thieves swiped batteries and copper wires from school buses overnight leaving them without ten of their buses and scrambling to pick up students.

"Now you're leaving kids out in the cold, they can't get a ride to school. Some parents can't carry their kids to school so they get on the bus," Rob Bryant, a parent said.

This is the most recent incident in a string of thefts from the Durham Depot over the last six weeks. An official at Durham Bus Company believes the batteries were dragged out under a metal fence. Police tell us the Dependability Bus Company at 3955 Frankford Ave was also hit on Monday. Nearly $5,000 worth of batteries were ripped off there.

"We have security here and overnight security cameras. We have it posted outside all over the fence stay away. You will get caught. It doesn't matter," Steven Jenkins of Atlantic Express said.

Jenkins is the terminal manager for Atlantic Express Buses. He says less than a dozen batteries were swiped from the depot this month, but during the most recent theft, his security guard scared off the would be thieves

"He noticed the fence was pulled up from the bottom and he glanced at what he saw were batteries. They ran off," Jenkins said.
