Flash Flood Watch Extended As Delaware River Ice Jam Persists

Posted: Updated:
MORRISVILLE, Pa. -

First the snow, then the cold, then the ice and now the floods – that's what we're dealing with now that we're out of the deep freeze.

A Flood Warning continues for Bucks and Mercer counties on either side of the Delaware River after an ice jam formed Wednesday and has caused water levels to rise.

And a Flash Flood Watch – posted for those two counties as well as Burlington and Philadelphia counties for whenever the ice jam breaks – has now been extended until 10 p.m.

CHECK: Latest Weather Warnings, Watches, Advisories

"When this ice jam breaks, there may be enough water behind the jam to cause flash flooding downstream," the National Weather Service says. "Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing through this morning. Therefore, the ice jam may not break until later today, at the earliest."

SLIDESHOW: Temperatures, Wind Gusts And Chills

Because of these freezing temperatures, flood waters have frozen into a sheet of ice, blanketing roads on either side.

Those icy road conditions made for headache for drivers heading home in Trenton on Wednesday night. Southbound lanes are closed along stretches of Route 29 in Trenton between Market to Calhoun streets.

There's no word on when this stretch will re-open.

And Route 32 North is closed in Yardley Borough.

At 4:15 a.m. Thursday, the river's stage was 19.3 feet and fluctuating. The latest National Weather Service forecast calls for the river to fluctuate around flood stage, which is 20 feet, this morning.

At 20 feet, houses on Brown Street in Yardley begin to take on water, the weather service says. Houses on Afton Avenue also take on water.

FOX 29's Dawn Timmeney has been reporting live Thursday morning from Morrisville with more details.
