But where will they shop ?
"Loehmanns". If you're a woman of a certain age, or you have a mother, or a sister, or an aunt, you know the name. I remember the big store on Route 9 in Natick, MA growing up, with tales of ladies in a mad rush for just the right designer outfit, flinging their clothes off in mid-aisle to try things on. That was exciting for a little kid.
Little did Frieda Loehmann realize what she was starting in Brooklyn way back in 1921. Here we are , some 90 years later, and the end is near. After filing for bankruptcy a few times, and after failing to find a buyer (hard to believe).
Loehman's is having a massive liquidation sale starting today in 39 stores in 11 states. The loyal shoppers I spoke with outside the LaCienega store near the Beverly Center in Los Angeles made it sound more like a wake than a closing sale. One lady lamented how she'll no longer be able to buy $600 dollar Italian sandals at a fraction of retail, another talked about how when she was ‘down' she'd just come in and walk around the aisles even if she didn't buy anything. Really. Another very elegant Beverly Hills housewife called it ‘‘such a sad day ‘'.
It's sad not just for shoppers, but for employees too. 332 workers will lose their jobs in California alone. Jaime Jackson said ''I'll just look for something else ." Good luck. How big is this ? Big. I mean, for a guy, maybe it's like the Raiders leaving LA ? No... much worse... The Dodgers leaving Brooklyn? Payton Manning leaving the Colts ? Close. The good new for shoppers of all ages, I think you have a few alternative choices out there, both brick and mortar, and of course the internet.
Though the internet (according to our style expert @LindsayAlbanese ) helped spell doom for stores like Loehmanns once the websites started popping up everywhere and in particular with liberal return policies because as we all know that in most cases, women, other than the few supermodels I know, have a hard time buying clothes they can't try on. Meantime, let me speak for the (much) fairer sex when I say "Thank you Frieda . "
