Video Released Of 7-Eleven Robbery That Left NJ Clerk Shot

Posted: Updated:
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. -

Police have released surveillance video of a Pennsauken convenience store robbery Friday morning that left a clerk shot several times and in critical but stable condition.

Police tell us it happened just before 1 a.m. Friday at the 7-Eleven on Westfield Avenue.

The video shows three robbers rushing into the store, and afterward there was evidence of a struggle after the robbery.

Police say the men took cigars – some of which were later visible on the floor – along with cigarettes and cash.

Police say they also now know why the clerk likely was shot because, as they looked at the video, they think the robbers probably tried to stop him from activating an alarm and alerting police. They said he's seen reaching to push a panic button behind the counter.

They think he may have been shot as many as four times.

Because this place is as busy as it is around the clock, that may be the reason why the clerk survived. Soon after the robber shot him and ran out, within minutes the next customer was in the door and found the clerk shot on the floor.

That customer got on his cell phone right away, calling 9-1-1. The operator then got police and an ambulance to the scene quickly, and the clerk was saved by the surgeons at Cooper University Hospital in the next-door neighboring city of Camden.

The clerk was relatively new. Several customers told FOX 29's Steve Keeley that the guy that he replaced just quit in December after he was robbed on the same overnight shift and had a gun pointed to his head. He quit, customers said, because he asked for another shift and didn't get it, figuring this was bound to happen.

By 6:30 a.m., the business owners had things cleaned up inside and reopened.

Pennsauken police say they are reviewing surveillance video from all of the cameras inside.

Video games may be pure fantasy, but a violent action-adventure game called "Watch Dogs" has ignited a very real debate in one South Jersey community. Watch Dog allows players to adopt the persona of a James Bond-like computer hacker, chasing an evil mastermind. People say it's chock-full of foul language, sex and violence, features dark and foreboding backdrops. The latest version, which is due out this fall may be set in Camden.
