CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Family and friends are mourning the death of 27-year-old Lexie Kamerman.

She was one of the Americans killed in a Taliban attack of a restaurant in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The Chicago native was working as a Student development Specialist for American University of Afghanistan.

A suicide bomber detonated at the front entrance of the restaurant and gunmen began shooting inside after the bomb went off, Friday night. 21 people were killed.

"There was no army in that restaurant, there was no police in that restaurant so this shows that they are the enemy of innocents and civilians and defenseless people," Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman, Sediq Sediqi, said.

Lexie Kamerman attended the Latin School of Chicago and graduated in 2004.

The head of the school, Randall Dunn released in a statement; "Lexie attended Latin School for 14 years and was a talented student and athlete. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her in our community."

The Kamerman family emailed this statement to FOX 32 news and stated that Lexie "…was an amazing young woman -smart, strong, beautiful, funny, stubborn and kind. And fearless. She took the job at the American University of Afghanistan to help the young women of Afghanistan get an education and take their rightful place as leaders in Afghan society. As you could probably guess, her death is a shock to us all and we can't imagine a moment going forward when she won't be desperately missed."
