At least 4 up to 13 killed in shootouts in Mexican town

HERMOSILLO, Mexico (AP) - Mexican authorities say at least four men died in a series of shootouts in the city of Agua Prieta, across the border from Douglas, Arizona.

Sonora state police said in a statement Saturday that two groups of criminals clashed before dawn in several of the city's neighborhoods. At least three bystanders were wounded.

The statement said that three of the dead men are from the neighboring state of Sinaloa and that the fourth victim has not been identified.

Police found the bodies scattered throughout Agua Prieta.

Authorities didn't say what groups participated in the firefights but the area has seen an increase in violence as the Sinaloa and Zetas drug cartels fight over turf.

Cochise County Sheriff's Office Mark Dannels issued a statement Saturday saying that his office was notified by the Douglas port of entry around 12:45 a.m. early Saturday morning of automatic gunfire and possibly hand grenades south of the border.

The Sheriff's Office estimated from their sources that between 8 to 13 people were killed and the weaponry used included automatic weaponry, .50 caliber weapons, and hand grenades.

Sheriff Dannels said that his office is ready, "The Cochise county Sheriffs Office has placed personnel on a heightened state of alert which will allow for the deployment of additional personnel and the augmentation of existing personnel should it be determined that this violence may potentially spill over into the United States via Cochise County's international boundaries".
